Retex Northwest Inc.—What kind of company is it?Recycle it all!
Retex Northwest,  is a family owned clothing and footwear recycling company located in Snohomish County. The company intends to institute European-style textile recycling in the Pacific Northwest. To do this, we will place collection bins in parking lots adjacent to retail establishments and intercept the flow of wearable used clothing, shoes and household textiles such as blankets, towels and curtains, that now end up in landfills.

But won’t Retex Northwest be competing with charities that collect clothing?
Not at all. According to the EPA the United States recycles only 16% of all clothing, shoes and similar goods. Despite the best efforts of charities and thrift stores, millions of tons of clothing are wasted every year. Retex Northwest,  wants to put every reusable article of clothing or household textile back into the hands of people who can use them.

What happens to the clothing, shoes and other textiles after they are picked up from the bins?
The clothing is shipped by cargo container to a grading factory, where it is sorted by size, season, age, gender, and condition. Rewearable clothing is sent to second and third world countries where clothing is in desperately short supply and resold in local second-hand shops. These shops not only become a valuable source of affordable clothing, but create jobs as well.

These rewearable clothes account for approximately 50% of the clothes collected in Retex bins. The other 50% is recycled in the following way:

  • 20% is made into cleaning cloths for industrial use
  • 15% is reclaimed for use as fiber for insulation products.
  • 10% is used to create new materials, like upholstery fabric.
  • 5% is waste, some of which can be composted

Why is recycling clothing and footwear so important?
Did you know that clothes and shoes take up more space than any other non-durable goods in the solid waste stream? As we increase our recycling of these items, we actually reduce the expense of hauling them away and putting them in the earth. That is an obvious benefit to the environment and it saves both your dollars (in hauling expenses) as well as tax dollars (in landfill expenses).

Secondly, there are people in other parts of the world that desperately need clothing and can’t afford to buy new. We guarantee that your reusable used clothing will go to places where it will be provided to truly needy people at a price that even they can afford.

Why should businesses place a Retex Northwest, Inc. recycling bin on their property?
It’s obvious that people in the Northwest want to recycle rather than to throw away. You can give them the opportunity to recycle where they shop. And often, to shop where they recycle.

Visit a Snohomish or King County recycling event and you will be awed by the number of people who save paper ice cream tubs for three months at a time in order to recycle them, rather than throwing them out. Give them a textile recycling bin and they will use it—and applaud you for hosting it.

Retex Northwest,  bins are attractive and occupy less than one parking space. They are fully insured and serviced as often as necessary to maintain a neat and orderly appearance.
